Start & Tremayne

Start and Tremayne is a family run business which was originally established in Burton upon Trent over 100 years ago.

Today the business continues on the High Street in Burton and at Barton Marina, in Barton-under-Needwood.

The main business continues to be the sale of high end quality designer leather goods, such as handbags, suitcases, business luggage, purses and wallets, all supported by knowledgeable and dedicated staff.

We also stock a large range of quality gifts including LSA glassware, comprising of beautiful Champagne ice bucket and flute sets, a variety of Gin glass sets, and Cocktail mixologist sets – exclusive to our Barton and Burton locations.

The luggage selection has recently been refreshed with an amazing range of high quality American Tourister products from Samsonite that is used around the world by Christiano Ronaldo. We still of course stock a comprehensive and stylish range of handbags by well-known names as Gianni Conti, Mywalit, Yoshi, Nova Leather and David Jones.

The Mug Tug

Whilst studying for a degree to become a complementary therapist, my family suggested that, once qualified, I could set up a treatment room on a narrowboat moored at Barton Marina, a place we live near and visited often.  Although I didn’t feel the location was what I wanted for my therapy business, the idea of running a business on a narrowboat stayed with me as an exciting idea… but what?

A couple of years later, during a family holiday in the summer of 2009, we visited a craft village with a paint-a-pot studio to while away a few rainy hours.  It was during this visit, as the girls in the family were absorbed in our creations – all mugs – I appreciated how fun and therapeutic the activity was – a wonderful addition to my list of holistic activities to recommend to clients – to explore their creativity and reduce their stress levels! The cogs started whiring and hey presto – light bulb moment – THIS is what I would love to do on a narrowboat!  I told my Husband as soon as I saw him and  by the time we got back to our holiday house he had come up with the name….. and so The Mug Tug was born!

The Mug Tug opened it’s door in October 2010 with an official opening by John Waterhouse in January 2011.

Wine tasting events linked to chocolates and cheese and other foods will be a regular feature.”

I’ve worked at the shop, previously called Sophia’s, since it opened in May 2010 and recently took over on 1st March 2016. I renamed the store Alyssa, after my daughter.

All 3 staff have stayed with the new shop, Heather Knight, Pam Wootton and Sue Ward, and we make a great team. We have a loyal customer base, as well as passing trade, and we pride ourselves in not being pushy sales people but we are there to help and advise customers if they want us to.

There are times when a customer will walk out with a new outfit that we have shown them, that they wouldn’t have picked themselves. We know we’ve done our job right when they come back and say how fabulous they feel in their new outfit!

The shop remains ladies wear and accessories, and I’ll be concentrating on our main brands of Joules, Seasalt, White Stuff and Thought this year.  Exciting times!

Our History

The business you know as John Partridge was founded in 1969, and was called Landowner. Back then we made fertiliser for the local farmers. We expanded the business into a range of waxed jackets and quilted waistcoats (which we’ve been making ever since.)

John Partridge as a company is privileged enough to have customers across the globe and in all walks of life – from country folk to royalty, media types to architects, urban and rural dwellers of all kinds.

In the year 2013 the company is starting our first website where our customers can purchase our designs blood pressure online. This has been created to allow customers more availability to our products whilst still delivering John Partridges high standard of customer satisfaction.

We are a small team who pride themselves on keeping customers for life as we will do all we can to assist and satisfy. We do not see our mission as just fashion, but also a product that lasts; if the products are not fashionable and long lived we have missed our target.

The story so far……

Hello, my name is Jill Hartley and I am co-Director of Nero e Bianco with my partner Michael Ballance.

I have always believed that women across all ages, shapes, sizes, ethnicity should feel fabulous in the clothes they wear! Sadly, I’m not convinced that we do. So many times we hear  “does this suit me?”, “can I wear this?” “am I too old?” “am I too big?” “I’m not good at putting outfits together?” “I can’t find anything stylish but comfortable!”   I could go on….. and although we try to be amused by that – quite honestly it’s not funny  is it!

In our busy lives, be it work, children, parents etc it is not always easy to find  clothes that we feel fantastic in.  I adore elegance, style, quality and fashion trends. I also feel  passionate about helping women feel good about themselves, to be able to wear fabulous clothes regardless of body shape, size and age! Along with that I want to help women feel confident in their choices of clothing and accessories by helping with their style, bringing their personality to life with clothing that compliments,   In fact that is what Nero e Bianco is all about, hence our line ‘with a personal touch’.
